Lions Lives Matter
Make Sure Cecil's The Lion's Life Meant Something! Many became acutely aware of the plight of the African lion when Cecil the Lion was allegedly poached by an American dentist last month. The truth is, lions are in crisis throughout Africa. Accordingly, the US Fish and Wildlife Service recently took action to list lions as “Threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.
There are approximately 35,000 wild lions left in the world today. Approximately 1200 live in the vast Niassa National Reserve (NNR) in Mozambique.
The Zoological Wildlife Foundation (ZWF) supports the mission of the Niassa Carnivore Project protecting lions and other large carnivores
Niassa works in close collaboration with the Mozambican government, the Reserve Management Authority and local communities.
The biggest threat to lions today is human-lion conflict. Not just poaching, but when lions prey on livestock it invites retaliation from farmers in local communities. Niassa’s focus is on “conflict transformation.”
They incrementally transform the perception of local communities by providing advanced schooling, mentoring and scholarships to train young Mozambicans to become Conservation Biologists.
ZWF believes that Lion Lives Matter, and creating educational and economic incentives to overcome human-lion conflict in local communities is critical to instill the kind of value necessary to encourage conservation. Your contribution will enable you to join the ZWF Conservation Team in Protecting Lions in Mozambique.
ZWF believes in creating educational opportunities for people who may never see these incredible felines in the wild. Our philosophy of employing real animal ambassadors creates an intimate connection with average people and fosters the spirit of conservation.
Your contributions make you a partner of the ZWF Conservation Team.
