Update on Big Bird, The Cassowary Bird!

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Big Bird is our Cassowary Bird, and has grown since the last time we blogged his arrival! If you see his previous photos when he had arrived here, you will notice that he did not have that casque on top of his head yet. A casque is a gray, helmet-like growth of tough, rigid yet elastic skin. This is one of its most distinguishing features and what gave the bird its name - in Papuan, ‘Kasu-weri’ means ‘horned head’. Dominant birds generally have larger casques. When the bird runs, it lowers its head and uses the casque as a sort of battering-ram to clear out everything in its path. Newly Built Enclosure For Our Lions!

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

We recently finished building a brand new enclosure for our Lions “Abu & Simba”. Abu & Simba shared their old enclosure with our Snow Tiger “Nabha”. Well, between the three of them, they definitely outgrew that cage! We are still not fully done with the cage, as it needs some more work and additional modifications to it, but it looks like all three of the cats are sure enjoying the enclosure as is. They haven’t stopped running with all the new space they have! We will post a video up soon too, so keep checking back! To view more photos of Abu & Simba, then Visit Abu & Simba’s Gallery, or to view more photos of Nabha the tiger then visit Nabha’s Gallery.

LOLA! The King Vulture

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Everyone meet Lola!

Lola is a King Vulture. She is a recent new addition to the ZWF Family. Lola was donated from a zoo and when she was younger she got frost bite on her “feet” so she has no claws! That doesn’t stop Lola one bit. She loves to follow you around and she actually walks pretty fast when on the ground. Whenever we approach the enclosure she is the first one to run up and greet us! She is a beautiful and amazing creature and is definitely enjoying her time here at ZWF. To view more photos of Lola then visit Lola’s Gallery.
