Update on Big Bird, The Cassowary Bird!

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Big Bird is our Cassowary Bird, and has grown since the last time we blogged his arrival! If you see his previous photos when he had arrived here, you will notice that he did not have that casque on top of his head yet. A casque is a gray, helmet-like growth of tough, rigid yet elastic skin. This is one of its most distinguishing features and what gave the bird its name - in Papuan, ‘Kasu-weri’ means ‘horned head’. Dominant birds generally have larger casques. When the bird runs, it lowers its head and uses the casque as a sort of battering-ram to clear out everything in its path.
