Dorito, our Bonnet Macaque!

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Dorito is a Bonnet Macaque, and has grown quite a bit over the years! If you didn’t know, the reason why we call him Dorito, is because he actually has a smell to him identical to Dorito’s! No matter how many times he is bathed he always smells like Dorito’s chips, so this is why we chose that name and it stuck to him. Dorito lives at ZWF with 2 other younger Bonnet Macaques, and they interact all day. Dorito actually acts like their protector, for instance if something startles them, he will go over and comfort them, but of course sometimes he acts like a bully and reminds them that he is the boss yet they all enjoy living together regardless. LUNA and CLIFF HAVING FUN!

Luna and Cliff

Luna and Cliff

Meet Luna, our Bonnet Macaque and Cliff, a White Faced Capuchin. They have been raised together since tiny babies along with Diana, our adorable Tufted Capuchin. They love each other`s company. Luna just was introduced to solid food. While Cliff still drinks his bottle. He is such a baby! They spend hours each day playing with their bright colored toys and blankets.

We spend hours on a regular basis cleaning cages, toys, blankets, preparing food, bottle feeding, bathing and interacting with our babies. It is part of our daily routine at ZWF. We enjoy the special bond and interaction with our primates. Part of our volunteer program is to have that same interaction and enrichment for our primates. We strive to do the very best for our non-human family memebers at ZWF.

Shower Time For Luna

Shower Time For Luna

Luna Eating Her Banana

Luna Eating Her Banana

Luna is our female Bonnet Macaque. She is three in half month old. She loves her shower time and pacifier. We started her diet with banana for the very first time, with a bottle of formula milk every four hours and soon will start eating solid foods.

The Bonnet Macaque has a very wide range of gestures and behavior which can be easily differentiated.  They do a lot of “Lip smacking” is one of the most common behavior, where one individual may open and close the mouth in rapid movement with tongue in between teeth and lips pressing against each other giving an audible sound.

She is a cutie and we enjoy every minute of her company. You are welcome to check out Luna’s Album for more pictures of her different expressions.

Luna the Bonnet Macaque!

Monday, July 5th, 2010

This is ZWF’s most recent member. Luna the Bonnet Macaque!  Luna lives with the other baby primates at our facility. They all get bathed on a daily basis, and given bottles with special formula made just for them. During the day they are all put in a large crib with a lot of different toys and blankets for enrichment and stimulation. We like to switch their toys and blankets around so they never get bored. Bonnet Macaques are very intelligent primates. Luna is a definite daredevil! She already loves to explore her surroundings and go off by herself.  Keep checking back for updates on how Luna is doing, and watch her as she grows up! If you would like to see Luna up close then why not come by for a tour at ZWF! Check out ZWF’S tours page and book your tour today!
